SPRING TRADE SHOW SEASON KICKS OFF IN MARCH IN HONG KONG AND BASEL

March traditionally sees the kickoff of the international gemstone and jewelry’s trade critical spring trade show season, with two (and effectively three) flagship events taking place, first in Asia and then in Europe. Together they draw in thousands of exhibitors and well over 150,000 visitors. MID House of Diamonds will have a prominent presence at both, continuing its well-proven strategy of maintaining a physical presence in the world’s key markets.

First up will be the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), which will stage the 5th Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show from February 27 to March 3 at the AsiaWorld-Expo, and then its twin event, the 35th Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, which will open its doors at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) on March 1, and run through March 5. Together, they will feature more than 4,480 exhibitors from about 50 countries and regions. In 2017, the shows attracted more than 85,000 buyers from 144 countries and regions.

The first of the two Hong Kong fairs is dedicated mainly to the wholesale business, featuring loose polished diamonds, coloured gemstones, pearls and other gem materials, while the second focuses more specifically on finished jewelry and watches. The schedules of the two fairs overlap for three trading days, allowing maximum interaction between exhibitors and buyers.

While the Hong Kong shows are most definitely international, the focus is always on the Chinese market. According to a recently published White Paper on China’s Cultural Consumption Market in 2016-2017, market demand for diamond jewelry in the world’s second largest market is currently valued at around RMB 62 billion ($9.8 billion) a year, and  over the next five years will grow at a rate of between 5 percent and 10 percent. This can mainly be attributed to an increase in the number of middle-class consumers and high income-earners, with  massive demand stemming from the wedding market.

Baselworld, Europe’s premier watch and jewelry show, is undergoing significant change, consolidating the number of exhibitors and reducing show time this year from eight to six days. This year the show will take place from March 22 to 27 at its traditional venue, the Messe Basel in Basel, Switzerland.

The show this year will feature between 600 and 700 booths featured, considerably lower than in 2017. But Baselworld remains a major event and is intensively covered by the world media, to a great degree because of its status the watch industry’s leading trade show. In 2017, the number of buyers visiting Baselworld totaled 106,000, and about 4,400 journalists were in attendance.

After years of stagnation, signs are more positive for the European luxury markets. According to a study published by Bain and Co. at the end of 2017, luxury bounced back last year, growing by 6 percent at current exchange rates to reach €87 billion in sales, regaining the continent’s its place as the top region for luxury sales by value.

MID House of Diamonds’ booths at both the Hong Kong and Basel shows will feature a large collection of white and fancy-colored loose diamonds, including blue, pink, green and yellow, in all shapes and sizes from 0.30 carats to plus-10.00 carats. All eight of the company’s international sales offices will be sending much of their top-quality material to the shows, among them a selection of rare GIA certified loose diamonds. Also on exhibition will be a collection of unique, high-end diamond jewelry, including rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings, featuring white and fancy-colored diamonds.

Visitors to the Hong Kong and Basel shows are invited to discover what MID is offering by way of the company’s new MID HOUSE OF DIAMONDS app. Designed for smartphones and tablet computers using the Apple IOS and Android operating systems, it has been created especially to meet the needs of the professional diamond trader, tapping into the massive global inventory of merchandise of one of the world’s largest diamond suppliers.
