PUNDITS SAY 19-CARAT ‘PINK LEGACY’ DIAMOND COULD GET $50 MILLION

The eyes of the diamond world will shift to the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva on November 13, where the top item at Christie’s scheduled Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale will be the Pink Legacy, an 18.96-carat fancy vivid pink diamond, which it is believed could be bought for a price as high as $50 million.

Once the possession of De Beers’ former owners, the Oppenheimer family, the rectangular-cut Pink Legacy is the largest and finest fancy vivid pink diamond ever offered at auction by Christie’s. It was awarded the highest diamond color grading of “vivid” by the Gemological Institute of America. In more than 250 years of auction history at Christie’s, only four such stones have ever appeared for sale.

‘The saturation, the intensity of this stone is as good as it gets in a colored diamond,” said Rahul Kadakia, International Head of Jewellery at Christie’s speaking to the auction company’s in-house news service. “To find a diamond of this size with this color is pretty much unreal. You may see this color in a pink diamond of less than one carat. But this is almost 19 carats and it’s as pink as can be. It’s unbelievable.”

The most expensive price ever received for a vivid pink stone, which was the $32.4 million received for the Pink Promise, an oval-shaped fancy vivid pink diamond of just below 15 carats that sold in November 2017. At the time a world auction record per carat price for any pink diamond was set at $2.17 million. The highest overall price for a pink diamond is $71.2 million, which was received in April 2017 for the 59.6-carat “CTF Pink Star” at Sotheby’s in Hong. The Pink Legacy has the potential of smashing all those records. It will be exhibited in Hong Kong, London, New York and Geneva before it goes on the block in November.
