IT’S SHOWTIME IN HONG KONG ONCE AGAIN, WITH WORLD’S LARGEST JEWELRY FAIR SET TO BEGIN

Despite rumors to the contrary, there was never any real doubt that the world’s largest jewelry trade show, the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, will open its doors as planned, first on September 16, 2019,at the AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE) near the airport, for about 1,700 exhibitors of loose diamonds, colored gemstone, pearls, other jewelry-making materials and machinery, and then on September 18, 2019, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai North on Hong Kong Island, for about 2,000 finished jewelry.

The show at AWE will run for five days through September 20, with its sister event at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, which is also five days long, closing on September 22.

Speculation about the 2019 fair had been sparked by recent mass demonstrations in Hong Kong by local residents protesting a new extradition law, which has clogged up city streets and at times shut down the city’s international airport. But the Hong Kong show is nothing if not resilient, having famously survived Typhoon Mangkhut, the world’s most powerful storm of 2018, with more than 54,000 buyers attending the 2018 fair, despite being closed for just one day for the first time in its 36-year history.

“We talked with a few key exhibitors and they told us how important it was to have the show in September,” said David Bondi, Senior Vice President of Informa Markets, the company which last year merged with UBM, the fair’s long-time operator, speaking with Forbes.” It’s the last show of the year and the last chance to get significant orders.”

“Bondi said so far only 20 exhibitors out of 3,700 have canceled their participation.

CAMPAIGN TO ENSURE ATTENDANCE AND SECURITY

To ensure that both exhibitor and buyer attendance at the show remains high, Informa initiated a telemarketing campaign with the goal of contacting 50,000 buyers throughout the world individually. Speaking to Forbes on August 29, Bondi said about 20 percent of the has already been contacted, and many have confirmed their attendance.

Additionally, Informa is providing 10,000 complimentary hotel room nights for buyers. Each exhibitor is being asked to submit the names of three significant buyers, who will be entitled to two free consecutive hotel room nights during the September Fair show dates.

The company also announced contingency plans, including traffic alerts and weather, as well as a a series of security measures.

The show at the AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE), near Hong Kong’s international airport, features 1,700 exhibitors of loose diamonds, colored gemstone, pearls, other jewelry-making materials and machinery, including MID House of Diamonds in Hall 7, Booth 7T02.

“These measures are designed to respond to potential incidents that may happen outside the normal range of the show’s operations, including special move-in and move-out arrangements at AWE and HKCEC, and enhanced transportation arrangements for participants,” says Celine Lau, Director of Jewellery Fairs at Informa Markets.

The show at AWE will run for five days through September 20, with its sister event at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, which is also five days long, closing on September 22.
