What is a

Rough diamond?

Raw diamonds, also called rough diamonds, are the uncut form of the world’s most popular white gemstone.

Rough diamonds usuallyย resemble lumps of pale colored glass. They often have an oily appearance and don’t sparkle. Very few rough diamonds are actually gem quality. Only those with the very palest colors, or are colorless will pass the test.

Didย

you know...?

Despite the age-old myth, though, coal plays no part in the creation of diamonds. Instead,ย extreme heat and pressure deep in the earth causes carbon atoms to fuse together in a very specific structure. These then cool quickly and crystals form. These crystals are what we know as rough diamonds.

To explore

When a diamond is mined, nature has already determined color, clarity, and most of carat weight. But a rough diamond just looks like a transparent rock.ย It doesn’t sparkle.

Rough diamond rings are often less expensive. Simply put,ย rough diamonds are cheaper than their more polished counterparts, mostly because they haven’t undergone an expensive cutting and polishing process

The five basic steps to cutting a diamond are:ย sorting the rough, planning for manufacturing, cleaving or sawing the rough into a preliminary shape, shaping the girdle, and polishing the facets. Decisions at every step of the process affect the value of the final polished gem.

the process

The process of cutting of a rough diamond crystal into a finished gem is sometimes referred to generally as diamond polishing. … Once the plan is decided upon, the crystal is sawn into the pieces that will eventually become individual diamonds. Each of these pieces is then blocked into basic shapes.

Natural Diamond

Diamond cutting is done by cleaning or sawing the diamond with a steel blade or a laser like the Sarine Quazer 3. The rough diamond is usually placed in a wax or cement mold to hold it in place and thenย cleaved along its tetrahedral plane, its weakest point. If no point of weakness exists, instead sawing is used.
